story line:

If you’ve seen the trailer for this film, I can confirm that it doesn’t cheat you, the film is exactly what you’d expect it to be. As far as I was concerned, that was a good thing.

Shania is a talented athlete who lives in a tower block, sleeping on her auntie’s sofa, and trains on an abandoned track. Despite her disadvantages, she is fast enough to get into the GB athletics squad and is also asked to join the relay team, which will mean running with her rival in the 200m Lisa, who is the daughter of a former gold medallist and big shot in UK athletics. The two bring out the worst in each other, although the viewer gets to see that both have their difficulties. Can the other, more down-to-earth members of the relay team and the dogged coach get them to pass the baton as smoothly as silk and run past all the other teams? If you’ve seen any underdog competes movie, you will know what the answer to that particular question is.

It’s a canny film, obviously made with the Olympics in mind; although the big races are at some made-up competition set in London, the idea is of winning on an international stage in front of a home crowd. I think it’s also fair to say that it owes its dues to Bend It Like Beckham, as it’s about a group of girls who are really good at sports. The main focus is on them making the most of their time and opportunity.
The most powerful moments come when these girls are running, whether it’s running to the winning line, running from drunken boys paying them unwanted attention (and leaving them for dust), running together or singly. Crichlow is really likeable as our heroine, although Shania’s got a chip on her shoulder, we’re mostly in sympathy with her when she stands up for herself.

I’d recommend it. It’s a fun film that puts a timely gloss on a familiar story. The script is a bit by numbers and the film doesn’t really work that hard on being realistic, from the ‘TV Sport’ channel to the haphazard training schedules (it seems churlish to think that the Americans would have won having trained like proper pros). The arc is everything, after all. Everything is done well enough, although there are moments or glimpses of a better, more real movie, such as the scene where Shania and Lisa talk about their fathers.
