A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess. Alice Englert is another young actor who has a chance to break out big this year. She'll star in “Beautiful Creatures” which hits theaters February 13th. Based on a best-selling young adult series, the film's producers are hoping they have the next “Hunger Games” on their hands which could make New Zealand native Englert the next Jennifer Lawrence. Englert comes from a movie background, her mother is director Jane Campion. This is the first time she'll headline a movie. “Beautiful Creatures” is about a coven of witches living in the Deep South and costars Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson.

Most interesting to us is the studio switch that finds the sequel to the surprise horror hit being released by CBS Films instead of Lionsgate. Back in 2010, the genre specialists relentlessly marketed the original for an $20 million opening weekend. Looks like CBS Films is determined to stick around and has begun to shell out for proven box-office hits (remember how The Woman in Black performed for them). Eli Roth is back in producer mode and probably knows more than anyone that this really is nowhere near the the last exorcism for poor Nell Sweetzer. Indie director Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) gets the call up to the semi-big leagues.

As Nell Sweetzer tries to build a new life after the events of the first movie, the evil force that once possessed her returns with an even more horrific plan.

Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found alone and terrified in the woods. Back in the relative safety of civilization, Nell realizes that she can't remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning.

Meanwhile, Mia Wasikowska continues to out-Fanning her peers with a series of wonderfully offbeat moves. After India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him. An enigmatic uncle, Charlie, moves in with India and her emotionally unstable mother, Evelyn, after the death of India's father. Although suspicions about his motives are raised, India and Evelyn soon find themselves drawn to him The movie premiered at Sundance and the reviews were extremely positive with praise going to the performances of Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman. Writing in The Guardian, critic Jeremy Kay called the film "a gorgeously mounted family mystery dressed up as a gothic fairytale," and said the film presents viewers with clues worthy of Hitchcock: "Literary references and symbolism abound in Stoker. You can get tied up trying to figure out who is what. That is the idea. All the clues are there. You just have to look closely."The Guardian awarded Stoker four out of five stars in its review.

But consider us a bit underwhelmed by the thought of her matching wits with Jason Bateman in his reunion with director Seth Gordon; their career comedy Horrible Bosses was hard-R formula at its most basic, and I fear we're in for another raunchy outing that doesn't play to McCarthy's true genius. When a mild-mannered businessman learns his identity has been stolen, he hits the road in an attempt to foil the thief -- a trip that puts him in the path of a deceptively harmless-looking woman.
