Co-directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell and their production/effects company Laika Entertainment created Corpse Bride and Coraline, examples of how animation works best when its source material is dark and creepy. Focus Features doesn't release many animated films - and their last outing brought us the thoroughly underwhelming 9 -- but it looks like they have another original here with a premise that's much more universal than a post-apolocalyptic rag doll in a Terminator-like scenario.

Looks like a cool family movie to me, and writer-wise, you could do a lot worse in the curiosity department than the tag team of Peter Hedges (Dan in Real Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape) and avant-rock scion Ahmet Zappa. Loving the glasses of wine consumed by Garner and Edgerton as they put their dreams in a box; meanwhile, doesn't this seem like a better premise for a mystery TV series?

Well, we lost Mickey Rourke but we gained full fledged roles for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who left politics behind (and California nearly crumbling into the ocean) for a return to starring roles. With Jean-Claude Van Damme shaping up to be the chief villain, I can honestly say I hope he takes out a principal cast member or two before his ultimate showdown with Sly. And really the big winner here is Simon West, who replaces Stallone in the director's chair and finally gets to be in on all the jokes made about him.

For some of us, Silent Hill was a dark-arts homework assignment as murky/foggy as the original video game, but its overall mood and memorable sequences made it a worldwide hit. (Pyramid Head was an underutilized terror, the climatic barbed-wire bloodfest scene was worth the wait, and Laurie Holden looked great as a lady cop in leather.) Six years later, an upstart distributor takes over the reins for the sequel's US release, and the storyline seems to be even more dense than the original, with Sean Bean playing two different characters and Radha Mitchell potentially still stuck in a different reality than her husband. We can almost hear the voiceover explaining everything during the intro credits, and we cannot wait to for some hopefully over-the-top acting from Malcolm McDowell and Carrie-Anne Moss.
