Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) and Viola Davis (The Help) in the leads, Won’t Back Down is promising to be a strong dramatic film this year, and I can’t help but think Fox will be pushing for an awards campaign for Gyllenhaal, Davis, or both for Best Actress come Oscar season.
The first trailer surfaced last month and got my spine a-tingling, and now the film’s official site has debuted the beautiful first poster, four new clips, and ten images from the film.
“Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis play two determined mothers, one a teacher, who will stop at nothing to transform their children’s failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children.”
Holly Hunter, Oscar Isaac, Rosie Perez, and Ving Rhames co-star, with Daniel Barnz (Beastly) directing from a script he co-wrote with Brin Hill.
Won’t Back Down will be released in the US on 28th September, which could put in prime position for an awards campaign. As yet, still no word on when we can expect a UK release, but hopefully we’ll be getting it at the same time.

When a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee, no-one is left unharmed. Based on true events. 

The film "Compliance," which had its world premiere Saturday morning as part of Sundance's low-budget NEXT section, hinges on just such a question, wringing a tense moral drama from a simple phone call. On a busy day at a suburban fast-food outlet, a phone call comes for the manager (Ann Dowd) telling her there has been an accusation of theft against one of her employees. The voice on the line (Pat Healy) identifies himself as a police officer and instructs the manager to take a young female employee (Dreama Walker) into a back room. After a time the girl is undressed and doing jumping jacks, all at the command of the officer on the phone, before things take a turn from the humiliating to genuinely hurtful (Compliance). No one ever just hangs up.
The story is based on true events, which writer-director Craig Zobel read about in a newspaper. Zobel's previous feature, "Great World of Sound," premiered at Sundance in 2007, starring Healy as the reluctant employee of a fly-by-night record label, with Zobel shooting people who thought they were auditioning for a music deal. "Compliance" is in some ways the mirror-image of "Great World."
Inspired by a chilling true story, 'Compliance' explores just how far one might go to obey a figure of authority. On a particularly busy day at the local ChickWich, the fast food joint's high-strung manager Sandra (Ann Dowd) receives a phone call from a police officer saying her employee Becky (Dreama Walker) has stolen money from a customer. Convinced she's only doing what's right, Sandra commences the investigation, following step-by-step instructions from the officer at the other end of the line, no matter how invasive they become.( Compliance )
Which is not to say the movie do not have right to exits; a few fellow critics have noted that the film makes for an excellent and productive conversation- starter. But alas! the film itself keeps falling back into the most painful realities of the true-story complex. It reminds hulk of all the times in creative fiction classes a young student is being criticized for this or that and then will shout " but it really happened!!!

story Line:

Family is one of the most important things in a person’s life. Alex Kurtzman demonstrates that fact in his directorial debut People Like Us. The film may not be particularly ground-breaking, but its sentimentality and sweet story is enough to warm moviegoer’s hearts across the nation(People Like Us). 

Sam (Pine) has seen better days. Not only is he stuck in the middle of a horrible lawsuit but he’s massively in debt. To make things worse, his father just passed away. When he flies back home to Los Angeles he makes a startling discovery; he has a half-sister (Banks) who lives at the other end of town that he never knew about. Once he gets close to her and figures out who she is, Sam begins a path of self-discovery through the

most troubling and vulnerable point in his life( People Like Us). 

As you may or may not know, People Like Us is loosely based off a similar experience from Kurtzman’s life. Since this tale is so near and dear to his heart, it took seven to eight years to bring it to life. It was well worth the wait. It’s easily one of the better movies him and Orci have written. They created elaborate characters we care about from beginning to end. More than anything, this is a sweet character piece and it shows. While settling his recently deceased father's estate, a salesman discovers he has a sister whom he never knew about, leading both siblings to re-examine their perceptions about family and life choices.

A.R. Rahman composed a soft, slightly subtle but still equally powerful score for People Like Us.

Unfolding largely in a London storage warehouse, this drama channels a love triangle involving Noel Clarke, his estranged girlfriend and her new boyfriend into a second plot isolating several characters in a confined space with a killer. Early on, a loud, off-screen bump presages both a crashed aircraft (from which something nasty has escaped) and intermittent power outages (which lock up the premises' security system, trapping people inside). An impressive if unoriginal monster is upstaged by – spoiler alert! – a cuddly toy dog with fireworks attached. The whole thing proves unexpectedly entertaining.

Humiliation and embarrassment do not a horror movie make however, and at around the same time, something hits London hard. Initial reports suggest an earthquake or bomb, but it soon becomes clear that the threat is from another world, or more specifically, the alien contents of a military cargo plane that has crash-landed in the middle of town.

For convenience sake, the creature ends up in Storage 24, the crash sends the facility’s security system into lock-down, and the malevolent monster and our five miss-matched humans become  trapped inside. Cue broken bones and spilled blood as the creature goes on the rampage and the humans fight to survive.

And that’s about it in terms of story, though while Storage 24 hardly re-invents the narrative wheel, it does have enough jumps, scares and laugh to make it a passable entry into the over-crowded sub-genre.

The director and writer/star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall reteam for the irreverent comedy The Five-Year Engagement. Beginning where most romantic comedies end, the new film from director Nicholas Stoller, producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Rodney Rothman (Get Him to the Greek) looks at what happens when an engaged couple, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle.

The film follows Violet Barnes (Blunt), a smart psychology graduate student, and Tom Solomon (Segel), a sous chef at an upscale San Francisco restaurant.
Unlike most romantic comedies, this film starts with the couple getting engaged, but trouble ensues when Violet gets accepted into her dream program at University of Michigan. Tom is forced to move to Michigan and their wedding plans keep getting postponed.
Critics have given the film, co-written by Segel and produced by Judd Apatow, fairly mixed reviews. Here's what some of them had to say:
"I liked 'The Five-Year Engagement,' and then I didn't, and then I did - which seems just about right for a movie dedicated to examining how even the purest affections can be fatally derailed,"Washington Post critic Ann Hornday.
"'The Five-Year Engagement' becomes two things: an accurate reflection of a new generation of postponement-prone 30-somethings, and a rather uninteresting story," Newsday critic Rafer Guzman.
" 'The Five-Year Engagement' is far more relatable than your typical Apatow man-boy fable - Violet is much more than just a fantasy prop for the romantic Tom," says New York Post critic Lou Lumenick.
"But much of the humor, as well as the disappointment and anxiety that shadow the laughs, arises from thwarted attempts at kindness. The result -- not to spoil anything -- is a very nice movie," says New York Times critic A.O. Scott.

Think Like a Man is a 2012 comedy film directed by Tim Story, written by Keith Marryman and David A. Newman, and based on Steve Harvey's 2009 book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. 

The film follows four couples. Each of the women are readers of Steve Harvey's book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. When the men learn the women are hooked on Harvey's advice, they try to turn the tables on their mates, which later seems to backfire.

Think Like a Man, an amorous ensemble comedy based on Harvey's 2009 best-seller, follows a dozen mostly African-American men and women as they attempt to navigate the brave new world of love by the book. The movie, which is very sitcom-setup-driven (it's The Best Man meets Valentine's Day), introduces its embattled pairings with titles like ''The Non-Committer vs. The Girl Who Wants the Ring'' and ''The Dreamer vs. The Woman Who Is Her Own Man.'' For a while, the cookie-cutter behavioral tics are funny in an overly broad way, even if the dialogue is basically stand-up patter turned into glib, fast conversation. And the actors make good company(Think Like a Man). I especially liked Romany Malco as the velvet-smooth player Zeke; Meagan Good as the spiky Mya, who finds it hard to stick to her dating-war codes; and Kevin Hart as the hilariously raging Cedric, who can't stop jabbering about the divorce he only thinks he wants.(Think Like a Man)

Yet Think Like a Man is so busy tracking courtship as if it were a science project that the bite-size love stories lack spontaneity. When the women first get hold of Harvey's book, the manipulations that ensue are fun. When the men read the book and try to out-psych the women, the film should grow ever foxier in its complications — but instead it comes down to a bunch of horndogs pretending to be chivalrous, which is repetitive and kind of soggy.

Movies about addiction tend to be heavy dramatic affairs, with stakes raised high and lives brought low.
But “Smashed,” a new film about a hard-drinking young woman who decides to get sober after one too many late nights, tries a different approach: It mixes in lightness with the seriousness.(Smashed)
"A lot of movies about addiction just sort of dwell in miserabilism, and we didn’t want to do that,” said James Ponsoldt, the film’s director and co-writer. “We wanted it to be something you could relate to, that young people can relate to.”(Smashed).
The movie premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival, where the relatability was on full display (Smashed).
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Kate, an elementary school teacher with a full life — she’s enthusiastic in front of a classroom and even more energetic in her nightlife, which consists mainly of drinking at neighborhood bars with husband Charlie (Aaron Paul) and his buddies. Kate also isn’t averse to nips at other times — swigging a beer in the shower, sipping from a flask as she drives to work (Smashed).
But after a series of marathon drinking sessions leads to her waking up in strange places, such as near the dried-up banks of the L.A. River (the Southland-set film makes ample use of Eastside Los Angeles locations) Kate decides to get sober. She takes the advice of a colleague (Nick Offerman) who brings her to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where she meets a sponsor, the wise but darkly comic Jenny (Octavia Spencer). Her new-found sobriety, however, drives a wedge between Kate and Charlie, who hasn’t given up booze.
